Zurich, Switzerland - Unfortunately, our big plans for this weekend were foiled by the weather. We had planned to spend a long four-day weekend in Lauterbrunnen, a municipality in central Switzerland known for its dramatic alpine landscape. However, the weather forecast turned sour and it appeared we might spend the weekend sheltering from rain showers rather than enjoying the beautiful vistas. So, we decided to cancel. H was very disappointed - this was yet another set of travel plans foiled by circumstances we could hardly control. But we rallied and came up with good back-up plans. We spent Thursday (a holiday) in Basel and Saturday we went hiking near Lucerne. Basel Basel (population: 180,000) sits in northern Switzerland along the border of France (to the northwest) and Germany (to the northeast). It is considered the cultural center of Switzerland. It has several notable art museums, a large annual art festival (Art Basel), and is home to the oldest university in Switzerland...
